Tips To Name A Flamingo

The key to naming your bird is making the name as simple for your pet to understand when they are being called. Also consider a name that starts with a letter that has a sharp, distinct sound.  A name that starts with a D, T or K sound can be easy for your pet to pick up but a name that starts with an S or F, which has a softer beginning, can be a little confusing for some animals. When selecting a name for your flamingo consider a name that does not sound like a command too. It is always best to pick a name that your pet can easily recognise. Most animals including flamingos respond better to one or two syllable names. Consider choosing a long name but keep the shortened version in mind. A long name will eventually be shortened, but it may ruin the effect that you may have had in mind if it is shortened incorrectly. You can wait for a few days to study your pets behaviour so that you can pick the right name that suits your flamingo’s character. The bird’s personality, appearance and how it relates to people can help you come up with a name much easier.

Interesting Facts About Flamingos

The word Flamingo is derived from the Spanish and Latin word ‘flamenco’ which means fire. The word  refers to the bright colours of the bird’s feathers. The chicks of these birds are born hatched and the birds pink colour is obtained from its diet. Each flamingos’ shade of pink differs by species, with the Caribbean species a vivid pink plus the Greater species a pale pink. When it  comes to the most widespread flamingo the Greater Flamingo is the largest and most popular member of the flamingo family.  Another interesting fact about a flamingo is that a fully grown flamingo male bird can grow in excess of 180cm tall. On average the lifespan of a flamingo bird in a zoo is on about 60 years, with the oldest having been recorded to live until  83, of a bird at an Australian Zoo. Also, flamingos are powerful when flying, especially when they fly together in a flock. The highest speed a flamingo can fly can be about 35 miles per hour. Flamingos just like penguins, are monogamous birds. The females lay one egg each year, if anything happens to that egg which may result in it not hatching the bird does not lay a replacement. Consequently, it often takes several years for the flamingo population to grow.

Flamingo’s Behavioural Traits

Flamingos have a tendency of congregating in mudflats or lagoons, where they can easily find in shallow saltwater prey. This is because such habitats are very difficult for predators to negotiate. Flamingos flock in groups of up to more than a hundred birds. These birds often perform their mating displays when together with the female flamingos, like this flamingo flamenco. On the other hand, different species and even different flocks may put a slightly different spin on their communal rituals. The male and female of a mating pair often build a nest together, and the two sit on top of an egg while it incubates for about a month or so. Some flamingos can even steal a nest that has already been built, so the mating pairs are always alert guarding a nest from other flamingos as well as other predators. When the chick hatches, both flamingos, the male and the female parents take turns to feed it. Flamingo chicks are fed by their parents with a liquid baby food they produce in their throats called crop milk, and then with regurgitated flamingo food as the chick grows older. Flamingo chicks also do not turn pink for a year or two, they are born with grey and white  feathers. Their beaks are straight, and only curve as they grow older and mature.

A Flamingo’s Diet

A flamingo’s diet can consist of blue-green and red algae, diatoms, larval and insects, crustaceans, molluscs, and small fish. Interestingly, a flamingo’s pink or reddish feather leg, and facial coloration come from a diet rich in alpha and beta carotenoid pigments. The largest amounts of carotenoids can be found in the algae and various other invertebrates that make up a huge chunk of a flamingo’s diet. Research has shown that these birds pump water through their bills 20 times a second to filter their food. Flamingos just lower their necks and tilt their heads slightly upside-down whilst standing in shallow water to allow their bills to hang upside down facing backward in the water. Also, these birds sweep their heads from side to side just below the surface of the water in order to collect their food if they have a deep-keeled mandible. In addition, a flamingo can filter its food out of the water and mud with a spiny, piston-like tongue that helps in sucking food-filled water past the lamellae inside the curved bill. Another way flamingo get their food from the water is by stamping their webbed feet to stir up food from the bottom.
