Do Moose Eat Meat?
Moose are herbivores; in summer they feed on leaves, grasses and underwater plants and in winter they eat twigs and bucks from shrubs and young trees. Moose tend to set up territories in areas with high nutritional food sources. Underwater vegetation is especially high in nutrition; this is why moose feel at home in water. They also feed on young forests blooming in areas recently burnt down by forest fires. Moose are large and they require a lot of nutrition to keep their bodies fuelled. Since they are herbivores, they face a challenge because plants are not as high in energy as meat. Moose are tall that they prefer to browse higher grasses and shrubs because lowering their head to ground level can be difficult. In winter they eat shrubs and pinecones, but they also scrape snow with their large hooves to clear the areas for browsing on mosses and lichens. These hooves also act as snowshoes to support the heavy animals in soft snow and in muddy or marshy ground. In summer, food is far more plentiful. When the ice melts, moose are often seen in lakes, rivers and wetlands feeding on aquatic plants both at and below the surface. Despite being huge, moose are good swimmers and they can stay under water for 30 seconds.
