Peacock’s Behavioural Traits

Peacocks are some of the most highly social and territorial birds. They tend to become aggressive towards strangers or new peafowl that dares to enter their territory. Also, these birds travel in groups of 8 to 10 called a muster, ostentation, or pride. It is believed that the main purpose a peacock’s colourful tail trail is to attract the female peahens for mating. In addition, performing a dance fascinates peahens and attracts them to mate the peacocks. Some studies have revealed that peacocks can even fake a copulatory call so that it can attract more peahens. Peahens on the other hand, choose a peacock based on its size, colour, and quantity of tail trains. Once mating is over, peahens will create a nest for their eggs. The males simply look for other peahens to mate with. In the wild, peacocks can be found in forested areas, as well as farms and other agricultural fields. They inhabit lowland forests, deciduous forests, and both tropical as well as dry habitats. Even in their natural range, these peacocks can roam in cities and parks in search of food. They sometimes even damage crops, but they also eat locusts and grasshoppers, which farmers can benefit from.

A Peacock’s Diet

The peacock diet consists of a wide variety of food such as forage for plants, insects, and small creatures which the birds can find on the ground. Peacocks can be regarded as omnivores, meaning that they eat both plants and animals. You will find a peacock feeding on plants and insects in the hedgerows that line paths and paddocks. Various types of peacocks are happy to take advantage of an easy meal but it is much healthier and better for the birds to move around and search for food the natural way. You can find peacocks freely roaming around wherever they like on a farm or garden and that makes them opportunistic feeders. These birds are often seen lurking near picnic tables outside a mill, for example, waiting for a family picnic to finish in order for them to enjoy the crumbs that have been left behind. Peacocks can also easily hop over the fences in animal paddocks and enjoy nibbling on the seed and cereal mixes that can be fed to goats and sheep on a farm. As much as peacocks can look for their own food in the wild these birds enjoy being fed.
