Why Name Your Pet Sloth

Names for pets or other human beings are important when it comes to unlocking our empathy. By simply learning a person’s name, we are capable of transforming a stranger into someone that deserves of our decency. The same empathizing effect of knowing a person’s name also applies to animals. By naming a pet or other animal, we distinguish them from a generalized animal to an individualized companion. For that same reason it is not surprising that our pets easily gained access to our affection and endearment that was normally reserved only for our own kind once we named them. As such, the naming of your pet sloth has the same effect. Your pet sloth is also one of your family members that needs a name. Even if the sloth may be wild and not domesticated naming it will result in it being watched and tended to more carefully and a result, it will make the animal less stressed. Overall, naming a sloth whether wild or domesticated is good for the animals welfare. Besides, research has shown that naming an animal moves people to better conserve and care more for the animal in general.

Some Interesting Facts About Sloths

A sloth at full tilt travels at an average speed of six centimetres per second. The animal has a stomach that weighs over one-third of its body weight and it takes 50 days or more to digest its food. A sloth only defecates once every 7 to 10 days and when a female sloth is in heat, she will climb down to the ground and go to defecate every single day. This occurs between eight and ten days every single month. Whilst she is at it, female sloths also pick up on everything she needs to know about her potential mates who would have gone to the bathroom before her. Another fact about sloths is that unlike humans, a sloth can hang upside down with no effect on its breathing and it does this almost 90% of the time. Its impressive biology allows it to spend most of its life hanging upside down.  This is because the animals’ organs are attached to the rib cage so they do not weigh down on the lungs. One last interesting fact about sloths is that the animal has an extra vertebrae at the base of its neck that allows it to turn its head on a 270  axis enabling it to obtain almost a 360view of its surroundings.

What Do Sloths Eat

A sloth’s diet includes mostly buds, leaves, and tender shoots, but some sloths have been known to consume insects and birds to supplement their diet. These animals have a multi-compartment stomach that enables them to effectively digest the tough cellulose that they eat and that can be a slow process that can make a sloth digest a single leaf in 30 days. These omnivores have molars which they use to chew up their leafy food. Also, sloths are nocturnal, mostly active at night and sleep all day. They eat, sleep and mate and even give birth upside down in the trees and sometimes remain hanging after death. Because sloths do not have incisors, they trim down leaves by smacking their firm lips together. These animals can survive on a very few meals due to their slow metabolic rate. Due to the sloths low metabolic rate and a low body temperature, which is about 91° Fahrenheit, the animal keeps its food and water needs to a minimum.

What Makes Sloths Stand Out

As much as sloths have long claws that make walking on the ground difficult for them, these animals can move up to three times faster when in water. This is rather surprising for such a typically slow-moving animal. In addition, sloths, can also hold their breath for almost forty minutes. They do this by suppressing their metabolism to make their heart rate a third of its normal speed. The animal’s nature allows it to conserve its energy, moving much slower than the average mammal on this planet. The sleeping pattern of sloths depends on its habitat. Sloths held in captivity can sleep from 15 to 20 hours a day, whilst those in the wild can sleep as much as humans, at around 8 to 9 hours a day. Also, sloths have a symbiotic relationship with the algae that grows on their fur. As the sloth provides the algae with shelter and water because the sloth’s fur is highly absorbent, the algae provides the sloth with a camouflage together with extra nutrients through its skin. Also, a modern sloth can grow as large as a medium-sized dog. But ancient sloths known as ‘megatherium’ are believed to have grown as large as an elephant.

Sloth Predators

When it comes to sloths, the common predators include the jaguar, the harpy eagle and surprisingly human beings. A large number of sloth deaths in Costa Rica are from contact with electrical lines as well as from poachers. The animal’s claws provide a further unexpected deterrent to human hunters. When hanging upside down in a trees, sloths are held in place by the claws themselves and do not fall down even if their shot from below. The animal’s main forms of protection are its camouflage which greatly increases by the coating of algae that grows on its fur and its very slow movement. These adaptations make the sloth almost disappear in the rainforest canopy and thus protect itself from its predators. Another way sloths protect themselves is by not sweating. Because they do not sweat, sloths have no body odour, which also helps them avoid predators and they spend much of their lives in the canopy, snoozing and remaining hidden from predators. Sloths can live  for 10 to 20 years in the wild and adult females can give birth to a single baby each year, however, the lack of movement can actually keep the female sloths from finding males for longer than a year and that can result in a decrease in the sloth population.

Where are sloths found?

Sloths live in Central and Southern America, enjoying the tall trees found in rain, cloud and mangrove forests. Most sloths occupy several trees during their lifetime, but most three-toed sloths may spend their entire lives in the tree they were born in. A sloth’s life revolves around sleeping and eating in its tree homes. they come down form tree tops only to poop (which they do once a week), search for a mate or to establish new territory. Three toe sloths are herbivores, and their diet consists of leaves and buds. Two toed sloths on the other hand are omnivores, meaning they consume both plants and animals. Sloths digest food even more slowly than they eat it. It can take up to a month for a sloth to digest a single meal.
